Take a Look at Our Library

Scribbles from...

Our family lived one year of my childhood in Saratoga Springs, NY., a fact that makes that year stand in relief within the stream of childhood memories. My mother quickly discovered the library was within walking distance and enrolled us in the summer reading program. We even had a brief flash of fame as the local paper featured a picture of us four oldest children in the matching shirts and shorts Gram had made, our heads bent over books in the library. I won the reading contest for my age group, largely because I read not only my books, but all my siblings as well, loving to read aloud to them.

Summer and libraries. They just go together.  Today we take a look at the modest library that is our own at Sisters in Scripture and encourage you to browse...

Our most recent and popular read, WHY THESE WOMEN, is a fascinating exploration of four women in the Bible who are direct ancestors of Jesus, as cited in Matthew's genealogy. Why are they there? What do their stories have to do with our own?

What if we took seriously their anomalous presence in the all-male lineup that opens the New Testament? What if we read their colorful stories for more than the titillation they contain, and probed them with sacred questions and expectation?

We might discover that the stories of these women become a part of Jesus' own story, their experiences and lessons woven into his parables and into his unfailing respect and compassion for women. We might recognize how we was formed by the stories of his people, including the women.

The Original...

SISTERS IN SCRIPTURE, the book that started it all, looks at pairings of women in both the Old and New Testament to explore the story from both sides: Sarah and Hagar, Ruth and Naomi, Mary and Elizabeth, Martha and Mary, and many more. Originally written as a guide for church groups, it is also useful for individual use. Best bought through the original publisher, Paulist Press

NOS - Never on Sunday

Women Step into the Sanctuary...

The sequel to SISTERS IN SCRIPTURE, NEVER ON SUNDAY, focuses on those women in the Bible whose stories are not in the Lectionary, women you will not hear about on a Sunday. We start off with the Five Women Who Saved Moses and travel all the way to the Women in the Early Church--every one of them women and names worth reclaiming.
