Scribbles from...
We were vacationing on the Isle of Majorca. (I’ve always wanted to start a paragraph that way). In truth, Majorca was one stop among several on a 7-day Mediterranean cruise, our first. We glided from island gem to island gem across a pool of silken purple the way a bee gathers nectar from flower to flower. The slant of late September sun dashed glints of gold in the wake of our passing. Scented floral breezes beckoned as we approached the shore.
Once on land, a bustle of sound burst onto the scene and the cool ocean palette of myriad blues was replaced by a riot of bright rainbow colors: oranges, green, red, yellow and gold. Our little tour bus hugged closely to every curve through the rugged rocky hills. At each turn, new vistas unfolded before us. I was on sensory overload.
“Is it always like this?” I asked our tour guide.
“We call this second summer,” she smiled broadly with local pride.
Second Summer… I was in love--the sound of it, the sensations that came with it, the idea itself, and all that it invoked.
I have always had a conflicted relationship with Fall. It appears on the scene with flashes of color and sweet, cool nights, Fall is a trickster. It uses these ploys like smoke and mirrors to distract against the day when you awake to frost on the window and gray branches scratching a gray sky. I like Fall, but I do not trust her.
Second Summer, however, second summer stretches out a hand inviting me to onto the dance floor of celebration—all that summer has been and still offers, all that is the moment, that is now. This calls for yes, for remembrance, for embrace. Like a lover who will be leaving but who must be loved until then, a lover who will one day return.
I do not know what kind of summer has been yours, and none of us knows what the turn of calendar page will bring, but the largesse of Second Summer fills and expands the possibilities. Reminisce pairs with resolve. We not only have memory to look back upon; we have promise to work toward.
Whatever transitions this season holds for you, may you be made bold with the surge of second summer. May you find joy in the beauty and bounty that this moment holds. May the music of the world rise within you and carry your dancing feet into whatever lies ahead.
And who holds the hand that beckons you onto the floor? Who is the partner you look across to recognize? Who is the Lord of the Dance? Only the One who spun stars into being, the One who spoke, “Come, follow me,” the One who is breath within and without. Such a partner can be trusted. You will be lifted when your steps falter. You will spin with joy when the music crests. You will rest in arms sure and strong as you move across the floor, paired with the One who stirs your soul.

FRIENDS OF TERRANCE McPHEE
News

Friday, Sept 19th, I was the guest of Mrs. White (my niece, Jenna), as I presented Terrance McPhee and the Toy Eating Tree to the combined 5th grades at Morris Elementary School in Lenox, MA. 60-some students and teachers gathered in the cafeteria for a PowerPoint presentation followed by a Q&A. Later one of the students used the QR in the book to download the pattern and folding instructions and made his own TMP-3 which he brought outdoors at last recess. He happily sent it sailing whereupon it promptly got stuck in a tree! (Thankfully, it soon fell down of it's own accord.)
Thank you Mrs. White and all the good folks at Morris Elementary.
It was a fun day!
