Mary Magdalene: Fact or Fiction

This Saturday, July 22nd, is the Feast of Mary Magdalene. A while back, I did a presentation for St. Placid's Priory, "Mary Magdalene, Fact or Fiction: What would Snopes Say?" Below is the quiz I created for that. You may test yourself and see how you do in the accompanying video that also provides explanation. Below the quiz is a link to that video. (Quiz portion ends at 11:30 minutes)

MARY MAGDALENE was... (TRUE or FALSE)

  • Present at the Crucifixion
  • Present at the Resurrection
  • Possessed by seven demons
  • The woman who anointed Jesus
  • The woman caught in adultery
  • The sister of Martha and Lazarus
  • A prostitute
  • Married to Jesus
  • A leader in the early church

I have frequently been asked by the Magdala Colloqy to provide articles for their online, international journal, WITH ONE ACCORD. Good news! The summer issue is now available. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with them, but when I was asked to create an article on Being Beautiful in the Bible it was a special delight. The task turned out to be quite a cautionary tale, indeed. If you've been one of my students or know anything at all about our sisters in scripture, you know from the stories of Bathsheba, Sara, Esther, Susanna and others that being beautiful can be fraught with danger. My piece explores this dimension of a thorny biblical dilemma. Here's the link to WITH ONE ACCORD. Enlarge and scroll through to my article and enjoy some of the other thought-provoking pieces along the way.

A Prayer or a Poem for Today...

The eye with which I see God is exactly the same eye with which God sees me.

My eye and God's eye are one eye" one seeing, one knowing, one loving.

- Meister Eckhart

Meister Eckhart was a German scholar and Dominican priest teaching, preaching and writing in the 14th century. Highly regarded as a mystic, his insights hold wisdom for today. This excerpt is from the newly published book, Meister Eckhart's Book of DARKNESS AND LIGHT: Meditation on the Path of the Wayless Way by Jon M. Sweeney and Mark S. Burrows.

Thank You

Thank you to the many of you who took the time to respond to the last newsletter and share your ideas of summer leisure. Reading a good book was the hands-down winner! Though any time spent out-of-doors was seen as a good time. A lot of you also shared a love for the "oldies" and a fresh appreciation of the songs and the lyrics.

Your invitation this time is to share how well you scored on your Mary Magdalene quiz.Get back to me.Brag, if you can. Take issue, if you want. But do share and keep the conversation going.
